Nurturing the Mother:
Specialized Massage for Pregnancy, Delivery, and Postpartum Care

*Provided by a Certified Nurturing the Mother Practitioner*

Pregnancy is a time of many changes.  Some are exciting, some challenging, and some can be very stressful.  Making sure you have the right support for you can truly enhance this marvelous time and help add to your glow.  Adding massage care from a trained and certified therapist can be especially helpful for promoting well-being.  Research by the Touch Research Institute of Miami shows that pregnancy massage:

§  Helps control blood pressure

§  Strengthens the immune system

§  Directly affects the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress and its consequences for mother and baby

§  Alleviates anxiety and depression

§  Strengthens muscles in preparation for labor and delivery

§  Allows for deeper breathing and a better night’s sleep

§  Helps keep the skin supple to help prevent stretch marks

§  Maintains body posture and balance

§  Enhances self-image

§  Shortens hospital stay (if delivering in hospital)

§  Reduces postpartum depression

Massage can also help reduce the following:

§  Nausea

§  Fatigue

§  Headaches

§  Lower back and abdominopelvic pain

§  Swelling and edema

§  Leg pains and cramps

§  Constipation

§  Indigestion

During labor massage has been shown to reduce labor time, labor pain, and even technical intervention.  Techniques during labor include:

§  Relaxation strokes to help soothe the body, mind, and nerves, and help redirect focus

§  Jaw release techniques to help the pelvis through reflexology

§  Lower back pain compression

§  Movement with massage, such as squatting and walking as permissible, and working pressure points

During the postpartum period, massage helps bring the body back into its pre-pregnancy alignment.  A massage within the first week of postpartum feels truly wonderful.  Flushing lactic acid out of the body tissues, it relieves sore and achy muscles.

Postpartum Massage:

§  Supports and enhances the realigning process, with a focus on the pelvis and ribs

§  Assists breast feeding, alleviating tightness and helping with some breast feeding difficulties

§  Aids in the process of the uterus returning to its normal size

§  Releases the shoulder, neck, and arm tension from the care and feeding of an infant

§  Helps relieve tension from the birth process

§  Helps the mother regain vital energy (Chi) to help reduce fatigue

§  Supports fluid balancing

§  Encourages pelvic and abdominal organs to return to pre-pregnancy positions

Energetic Healing Modalities:
Reiki and Shamanism

Reiki (pronounced “ray-key”) is a technique from Japan that is frequently used for reducing stress, increasing relaxation, and promoting healing.  Seichim (pronounced “say-sheem” or “sake-hem,” depending on when the practitioner learned the modality) is a similar technique that hales from ancient Egypt.  The two are combined wonderfully in sessions, and are shared either by touch or by working with the astral body of the recipient either in person or over distance.

They are based on the idea that there is an unseen life force energy that flows through us all, causing us to be alive.  When this life force energy is low, we are more likely to feel stress or become ill, while when it is high we are more likely to feel healthy and be happier.  Reiki and Seichim treat the whole person, physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.  Benefits include relaxation, feelings of peace, wellbeing, and security.  They are safe, simple, and natural.  Energetic healing modalities have shown encouraging results in instances where clients are unable to receive massage due to systemic illness or high pain illnesses, but would still like to have those feelings of comfort, peace, and wellbeing.  Reiki and Seichim can also be used with healing injuries, and have been used in conjunction with other medical and therapeutic techniques to help promote recovery.  Reiki and Seichim are not religions and there are no dogmas, though they are spiritual in nature.  All are welcome.

Energy clearing and balancing can also be performed, and frequently accompany Reiki/Seichim sessions.  It works to release blockages in energy flow and help balance the energy flow.  The work is done intuitively.

                Traditional Swedish Massage:

Receive deep relaxation from a massage modality specifically designed to help ease stress, soothe the nerves, increase circulation, and help boost the immune system by promoting a sense of health and well-being in the body.  Long, fluid strokes combine with kneading, stretching, and tapotement to encourage the body to move back into balance.

                 Deep Tissue Massage:

There has been quite a bit of confusion between the terms "Deep Tissue" and "Firm Pressure."  Deep Tissue work is a set of techniques used to open and release constricted tissues.  Gliding, cross-fiber friction, kneading, stretching, and static pressure can all be incorporated, vigorously or gently, with varying levels of pressure.  Some techniques on constricted tissues can cause discomfort, but clear communication between client and practitioner combined with deep, even breathing can help minimize discomfort and help make sessions more effective.  When combined with stretching and energy work, tissues can release and physical and energetic bodies can move back into alignment.  Beautiful!

While knuckles, elbows, and forearms can and may all be incorporated, your comfort level is always in consideration.  The question has been posed: "Why not simply push through the pain, hold your breath, and work with really firm pressure to get tissues to release more quickly?"  One of the body’s first responses to pain is to clench or tighten to protect the area.  Another is to minimize breath.  If therapist and client choose to “muscle through,” damage can be inflicted on the area, leading to inflammation of the tissues, and even bruising and increased healing time.  We have found there to be a gentler way for perform Deep Tissue techniques, helping the body to relax by working slowly and releasing muscles layer by layer.  While there may be discomfort, Deep Tissue work does not need to hurt.  It can help restore balance in the body over time and work can be performed at the client’s comfort level and still be extremely effective.

Belly Love:

This 60 or 90 minute session focuses on an area that is commonly ignored in many modern massage practices: the belly. An estimated 80% of our immune system lives in out digestive tract, and we also store a multitude of emotions in our abdomen (think of the phrase "I felt it to my core").  Belly Love helps release toxins and blockages and aid in digestive and reproductive function.

A castor oil treatment is applied to the belly and then gently warmed while you rest for 30 minutes so the castor oil can gently open and lubricate tissues and encourage the removal of toxins.  During this time, receive gentle and thorough scalp, hand, and foot massages (or focus on one for the duration if you choose) to help increase relaxation.

When the castor oil pack is removed, the belly is massaged to encourage proper organ alignment, increase circulation, boost the immune system, aid digestion, release tension or possible adhesions, ease sluggishness, and bring a sense of peace.

Letting Go:

Many ancient cultural medical practices including Chinese and Indian believed that cleansing at the beginning of each new season was a healthful idea to incorporate.  This allows the body to rest and let go of toxins that have potentially accumulated during the past season so you can start fresh for the new season ahead.  Massage was frequently received during this time.

With the 90 minute Letting Go massage session, a special aromatherapy oil is applied liberally to the back of the body, and then medicinal cups are used to create gentle suction and stimulate the bladder and gallbladder meridians.  Gentle massage with stretching follows for the full body, including a gentle abdominal massage.

Release toxins, ease sluggishness, and encourage renewed vitality by letting go.

***Please note: you are strongly encouraged to ensure you are well-hydrated before and after your session to improve the removal of toxins.

Ti’an Di Bamboo Massage:

Experience Heaven (Ti’an) on Earth(Di) with this wonderfully relaxing Traditional Chinese Medicine inspired modality.  TCM believes the body to be made up of the 5 Elements (Metal, Water, Earth, Wood, and Fire) and Spirit.  Bamboo rods known as "Cho Sticks" (pronounced "choo") of various sizes are used to massage the body, promoting the restoration of balance and encouraging the release of toxins.  Take the experience further and add Cupping and Scraping to the service, to encourage further removal of toxins.  For Cupping, plastic cups are applied to the skin and use suction to help pull toxins, work deeply into the muscle to remove blockages, increase circulation, and encourage the opening of tissue to promote well-being.  Scraping follows by taking a flat ribbed object and moving it briskly over the skin to scrape off toxins and stimulate circulation.  Great as a preventative, Cupping and Scraping can also help with alleviating chronic muscle tightness or even chest colds that seem to linger.

Castor Oil Pack

Castor oil packs have been used since ancient times by cultures in China, India, Greece, Rome, Africa, Persia, and several places in the Americas.  They have been used to treat many conditions, such as intestinal and liver disorders, fibroids (including uterine), cysts (breast and ovarian), adhesions from surgery (including Caesarean births), digestive complaints, and a variety of skin conditions.  The gentle warmth and nourishing effects of the castor oil are helpful whenever there is congestion, a decrease in the blood-flow to an area, and a need for healing.

A castor oil pack of soft cotton flannel soaked in castor oil is applied to the abdomen, and then covered with plastic wrap.  A heat source such as a hot water bottle is then placed on the plastic and covered with a heavy towel to help maintain warmth to aid the treatment.

This can be added to your session, either as a one-time in-session treatment, or as an in-office treatment and then put in a kit to take home so you can continue treatments on a schedule you determine with your therapist to be best for you.
